Who Am I

Hello,

Well, its been a long time coming. I have had this virtual web server set up for quite some time now. But, learning debian, drupal, php, etc. while still trying to work at learning all the new .Net 3.5 SP1 stuff takes alot out of you... as I'm sure you're all aware. In addition to that I decided to buy an iMac so I could learn about it, and also use it to learn Ruby on Rails, git, capistrano. Yes, I'm into just about everything.

So, who am I? Well I am a software developer. I work for 'da man but do some part time consulting and development on the side. I started out my career quite a while ago, hmmm lets see 1990ish... was it that long ago. I had been programming in high school and after a few years in the "real world" decided to go get some college credentials. So, sure now I have an A.S. but I most of what I learned was on the job in the school of hard knocks.

Anyway... got my first job writing and using Clipper. From there I moved to FoxPro for Windows then to Visual FoxPro. I spent several years doing that. I even published a book _Creating Visual FoxPro Applications with Visual Fox Express_. It was alot of work. My current job is as Principle Architect on a .Net web app. My plan is to move our legacy .Net 2.x/VB6 COM objects to a 100% .Net app using a Silverlight 2.0 UI and Entity Framework with some Astoria thrown in the mix.

So, what will this blog be about? It will probably be all over the place just as you see I dabble in everything. The blog will probably be a combination of what I've learned and cries for help. I might talk about some gadget I have or software tool I'm using. So, basically we are talking about Windows, OS x, Entity Framework, Silverlight, MVC Framework, MS Ajax, Ruby, Rails, Textmate, VIM, CCnet, CI Factory, OpenID, ASP.Net, Patterns, Moq, MBUnit, MSTest, Crystal Reports, SQL Server, etc.

What will I not blog. I will not blog any "me too" info. If a new version of Windows is released I'm not going to tell you about it. If Soma posted an announcement about Visual Studio being free you won't see my point to the announcement. I think you all subscribe to that kind of info anyway. That said, I'm not above a comment or two. If I have something to say about recent news I'll certainly chime in.

My blog's name. Quite a while ago I worked with a great group of folks. Most of them have moved on. But, we always used to say something like, "It's a long day when you don't learn something new." I believe that. While I like to think I'm pretty good at what I do, and keep in touch, I also like to think that I am humble enough to realize that I have alot to learn. So, I want to learn something every day. A day you learn something new is a good day, a short day. Hence "No Long Days."

BOb

PS: Please ignore the dust here. I am still learning Drupal and themes and stuff.
